Adopt a Gold Resolution proclaiming February 2024 as Black History Month in Sonoma County

End

Executive Summary:

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” when Carter G. Woodson sent out a press release announcing the first Negro History Week in February 1926. Since 1976, the month of February has been officially designated as Black History Month by Gerald Ford. Thereafter, each president has recognized and celebrated the month of February as Black History Month.

This year’s 2024 theme is, “African Americans and the Arts,” spanning the many impacts African Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements and more. In celebrating the entire history of African Americans and the arts, puts a national spotlight on the richness of the past and present with an eye towards what the rest of the twenty-first century will bring.

Discussion:

The County of Sonoma Commission on Human Rights (CHR) was established in 1993 to promote better human relations between all people in Sonoma County. CHR is an advisor to the Board of Supervisors on areas that impact the human rights of members of our community. The Commission on Human Rights honors the many black families who helped build Sonoma County, and pledges to keep facing racial adversity. They invite the County of Sonoma Board of Supervisors to observe February as Black History Month and to continue their efforts with their Five Year Strategic Plan of Racial Equity and Social Justice.
