Discussion:
Nick Honey began his career with the Sonoma County Human Services Department on July 2, 1996 as a social worker in the Family, Youth, and Children (FYC) Division. He started his career in public service 11 years earlier in England as a counselor, and then worked at Royal County of Berkshire as a social worker before coming to California. He also has experience working in residential care for children and families.
After two years with FYC, Nick promoted from a social worker to a Social Service Supervisor II overseeing Family Reunification and Family Maintenance. In March 2001, Nick promoted to Human Services Section Manager in FYC overseeing the Placement Section.
Nick became the division director of the FYC division in March 2007. Under his leadership, he implemented many initiatives and practice improvements including Safety Organized Practice, Continuum of Care Reform, the Katie A. Agreement, Quality Parenting Initiative, Resource Family Home Approval, Child and Family Team meetings, Team Decision Making, Case Review, and the development and implementation of the CORE Practice Model, just to name a few.
Nick was an active member of the County Welfare Directors Association and served as the co-chair for the Transitional Aged Youth subcommittee for many years.
During his time as division director, Nick led his division through three major wildfires and the coronavirus pandemic with resilience and compassion. Through his leadership during this time, Nick ensured that the children and families served by FYC were safe and well cared for, and that they received the resources they needed to recover from the impacts and unprecedented challenges brought on by multiple disasters.
Nick will be remembered for his dedication to public service, his calm and caring demeanor, and his passion for serving children and families. He was seen as an expert in the field of child welfare across the state and was a true champion for the safety and well-being of the children in our community. Nick was also very dedicated to the professional development and overall well-being of his staff, and he will be remembered as a thoughtful, compassionate and supportive leader to all who had the privilege of working with him.
