Title

Adopt a Gold Resolution proclaiming the week of April 5 through April 11, 2021 as National Public Health Week in Sonoma County.

End

Executive Summary:

Since 1995, when the first full week of April was declared National Public Health Week communities across the United States have observed the time as an opportunity to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the public’s health. By Presidential Proclamation, Public Health Week is recognized nationally in the first week of April each year.

Discussion:

We may not be able to gather in person but it is important to come together via virtual platforms and social media. This year National Public Health Week will be celebrated virtually on the week of April 5-11, 2021. The theme for 2021 is “Building Bridges to Better Health.” The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that building connections is more important than ever if we want to ensure the health and safety of all people within our communities.

There are seven daily themes: Rebuilding, Advancing Racial Equity, Strengthening Community, Galvanizing Climate Justice, Constructing COVID-19 Resilience, Uplifting Mental Health and Wellness, and Elevating the Essential and Health Workforce. For National Public Health Week, we will focus on four of the seven daily themes.

Rebuilding

There is slow and steady recovery occurring after not only the devastation of the Walbridge, Stewarts, Meyers and Glass fires of 2020, but from the multiple lives altered by over 300 local deaths and 27,500 cases of COVID-19.

Advancing Racial Equality

Noting the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 in the Latinx and indigenous communities locally, there has been purposeful advancement and strengthening of county government by the addition of an Office of Equity. Through this office, oversight and guidance has been available in multiple COVID-19 planning efforts for continued rebuilding and addressing health equity.

Strengthening Community

All efforts in managing the COVID-19 challenges have included an awareness to work closely with multiple community-based organizations within Sonoma County including volunteers, State colleagues, CDC Foundation, local health care partners and medical providers, Public Health Institute, IsoCare, COVID-19 Urgent Response and Aid (CURA), and Sonoma County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD). While past collaborations were already in place, these close working relationships have developed further and have been one of the most important ways that effective statistical analysis, case management, contact tracing, resource support, testing, vaccination, outreach and education have reached and benefited residents within our county borders.

Elevating the Essential and Health Workforce

An unprecedented addition of a diverse workforce has occurred within Public Health in order to perform the herculean tasks necessary to meet the challenges of COVID-19 in Sonoma County. This work has occurred through telecommuting, and office and field work reaching every corner of the county. Many of these services have been offered seven days a week. Along with the national awakening for the need to address social and racial inequities, our diverse work group within Public Health has helped provide more equitable services.

The dedicated Public Health workforce and our community-based organization partners, have worked tirelessly in serving our residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Public Health Week raises awareness of public health’s critical role in protecting and promoting health in our nation, state and in Sonoma County.
