Executive Summary:

The canvass for the March 2, 2021 Special Election has been completed and certified by the County Clerk. The Clerk is now submitting the official canvass to the Board of Supervisors for adoption as provided by law.

Discussion:

Pursuant to California Elections Code §§1000, 1002, 1400, 9140, 10400, and 12001, a special election was held on March 2, 2021.  California Elections Code §15372 provides that the elections official (the County Clerk) shall canvass the returns, prepare a certified statement of the results of the election, and submit the statement to the appropriate governing bodies.  California Elections Code §15400 states that the governing bodies in turn shall declare the results of each election under its jurisdiction.

In this election, there were two measures filed by different governing bodies.  Measure A was a parcel tax measure put on the ballot by the West Sonoma County Union High School District (WSCUHSD) Board of Trustees. Measure B was a Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) measure put on the ballot by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors (BOS).  The certified results of Measure A are being transmitted to the WSCUHSD Board of Trustees for adoption.  Similarly, this Board item serves as the transmission of the certified results of Measure B to the Sonoma County BOS for adoption.

Prior Board Actions:

Resolution 20-1283, dated January 26, 2021, authorized consolidation of any local election held in conjunction with the March 2, 2021 Special Election.
