Executive Summary:

The Department of Transportation and Public Works is committed to providing quality transportation and public works services in a responsive and professional manner to benefit residents and visitors of Sonoma County. The professionals staffing the County’s Transportation and Public Works Department help to ensure that Sonoma County’s infrastructure and public services remain accessible, reliable, and resilient. Every resident of the County is touched by the services provided by these outstanding public servants. The requested action formally recognizes the contributions made by these individuals.

Discussion:

National Public Works Week was instituted as a public education campaign by the American Public Works Association in 1960, calling attention to the importance of public works in community life. This week’s recognition seeks to enhance the prestige of these often-unsung heroes of our society, the professionals who serve the public good every day with steadfast dedication. This year the dedication of public works staff comes at a time in which staff has played a prominent role in providing essential services during the County’s response to the COVID-19 emergency. The road maintenance, transit, refuse, engineering, construction, airport divisions and support staff continue to provide essential services to the community ensuring continuity of operations and support to our local economy.
