Executive Summary:
Recognizing Binational Health Week in Sonoma County leads to increased public support and greater community engagement on important health issues. Binational Health Week promotes improved health for Latinos living in the United States and Canada.
Discussion:
Binational Health Week is the largest mobilization effort in America to improve the health and well-being of the underserved Latino population living in the United States and Canada. During Binational Health Week, federal and state government agencies, community-based organizations, and thousands of volunteers come together annually for a multi-week period starting in the month of October to conduct a series of health promotion and health education activities that include workshops, service referrals, vaccinations, and medical screenings.
Binational Health Week fosters community solidarity by bringing together existing resources and thousands of volunteers working together for a common goal. The events are coordinated by a collaboration of community and government agencies from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other Latin American countries with the purpose of reaching out to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people, especially those without medical coverage.
In 2016, 1,784 events were organized, including health fairs, conferences, classes, and sports events. Approximately 240,146 people attended those events. Close to 4,680 organizations joined to provide health screenings and services.
This year, several events honoring Binational Health Week are scheduled across Sonoma County during the months of October and November. The main health topics addressed this year are farmworker outreach, health care, and access to health insurance. The Binational Health Week 2019 Health Promotion and Health Education Event Schedule is provided as Attachment 2.
To honor Binational Health Week, several local agencies including California Human Development, St. Joseph’s Health, and Latinos Unidos del Condado de Sonoma will participate in events and activities to improve access to health services for Sonoma County’s Latino immigrants and their families. Specific focus areas and activities include health insurance information, CalFresh enrollments/appointments, flu and tetanus immunizations, eye exams or screening, dental exams, diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, child safety, and assistance from the Mexican Consulate to assist with issuing Mexican Passports.
Prior Board Actions:
In most years since 2001, the Board has adopted resolutions recognizing Binational Health Week; most recently on October 9, 2018.
