Discussion:
Suicide is a major public health issue that requires vigilant attention and preventative action. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report in November 2018 stating that suicide rates rose in the United States from 1999 to 2017 by 33 percent, from 10.5 to 14.0 per 100,000 people per year.
On average there are 75 deaths by suicide each year in Sonoma County, making suicide the ninth leading cause of death in the County. According to the California Department of Public Health “County Health Status Profiles 2019” report, the Sonoma County three-year average age-adjusted suicide death rate for 2015 through 2017 was 12.4 per 100,000 people per year, statistically higher than the California rate of 10.4 per 100,000 people per year.
Efforts to prevent suicide in Sonoma County are scheduled for Suicide Prevention Week. The September edition of the Mental Health Services Act Newsletter highlights several scheduled activities that recognize Suicide Prevention Week including:
- September 10: Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk training for clinicians in Santa Rosa
- September 10: QPR: Question Persuade, Refer Suicide Prevention Training in Guerneville
- September 18: Elderly Suicide: Risk and Prevention hosted by the Mental Health Board in Santa Rosa

The theme of this year’s activation kit is Finding Purpose: Taking Care of Ourselves and Others. Having a sense of purpose in life is truly powerful, it enhances resiliency in the face of challenging circumstances and helps us keep going when things are tough.
