Title

Adopt a Gold Resolution recognizing Herman J. Hernandez as the 2019 Carroll L. Estes Older Adults Advocacy Award recipient.

Body

Executive Summary:

In April 2018, Sonoma County’s Aging Together Steering Committee established an annual award to honor an outstanding individual in the field of aging.  The first recipient of the Carroll L. Estes Older Adults Advocacy Award was Carroll Estes in April 2018.

Discussion:

Each May, the Aging Together Steering Committee awards the Carroll L. Estes Older Adults Advocacy Award to a community champion who has demonstrated exemplary advocacy on aging issues. Nominated individuals are recognized for their work in promoting or initiating programs and policies that benefit older adults locally, regionally or nationally.

The recipient of the Carroll L. Estes Older Adults Advocacy Award for 2019 is Herman J. Hernandez. Herman works to elevate the voices of Sonoma County’s Latino residents and has championed intergenerational and cultural engagement by bringing people together from across generations and lived experiences. Herman is a founding member of Los Cien, an organization that seeks to build a better future for Sonoma County through engagement, education and the promotion of interdependence between the Latino community and the wider community by providing a venue for the exploration of issues that affect county residents.

Herman also serves on the Health Action Council, a partnership of local leaders, organizations, and individuals dedicated to improving health and well-being and reducing disparities across Sonoma County.

Herman has a long history of volunteerism, including the Russian River Park and Recreation District, the Sonoma County Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, the Family Justice Center of Sonoma County and the North Bay Association of Realtors.
