Executive Summary:
The University of California Cooperative Extension-Sonoma County Office would like to recognize the significant positive impact of the Sonoma County 4-H Youth Development Program, County Club Council, Youth County Ambassador Program and recognize National 4-H Week, the week of October 6-12, 2024.
Discussion:
This year marks the 105th anniversary of Sonoma County 4-H at the University of California Cooperative Extension-Sonoma County Office. The 4-H Program is a cornerstone of our community, as it engages, enables, and empowers youth to learn by doing, acquire invaluable life-long skills, gain practical knowledge in areas that spark their interest while engaging, serving, and giving back to our community. 4-H members contribute to our community by addressing local community service and outreach needs. They thrive while developing leadership, skill building and innovative learning, strengthening community spirit as evidenced by the ongoing commitment to supporting the development of our youth and positive involvement in the vibrancy of our community.
National 4-H Week, October 6-12, 2024, is a time when the network of youth members, volunteers, and leaders will celebrate 4-H Week across the nation, a designation supported by the Assembly of the State of California.
The County Club Council is comprised of passionate and dedicated 4-H volunteers and members, committed to developing, promoting, and executing countywide educational events, community service projects and club activities. This council not only empowers youth to take ownership of their projects but also encourages youth to thrive and inspire a brighter future through awards and scholarships. The Sonoma County Harvest Fair selected the County Club Council as a recipient of the outstanding members of the Sonoma County agricultural community to be honored for their contributions to the preservation and enhancement of farming in Sonoma County. The County Club Council received the 2024 Agricultural Award, Friend of Sonoma County Agriculture. According to the current President, Sara Glashan, "We are a committed group of volunteers. Many of us haven't had kids in 4-H for many years, but we want to ensure the steeped in tradition is preserved and remains available for children in our county, as we embrace the ever-changing landscape of the program. In my opinion, there is no better program for youth growth and empowerment than 4-H."
The Youth County Ambassador program further enhances this impact by providing select 4-H members with leadership training and public speaking opportunities. Ambassadors represent Sonoma County 4-H at various events, advocate for the program, and serve as role models for their fellow peers. Their efforts help to inspire and engage other young people, of culture, leadership, and community involvement.
