Executive Summary:

Human Resources Department in partnership with Human Services Department-Job Link and Department of Rehabilitation is requesting the Board of Supervisor to proclaim October 2025 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in Sonoma County.

Discussion:

October 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). NDEAM originated in 1945, when Congress passed a law declaring the first week in October to bring awareness, educate, and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to the whole month of October. 

The 2025 theme for National Disability Awareness Month is “celebrating value and talent” to honor the contributions of Americans workers with disabilities and highlights their achievements both past and present. Individuals with disabilities have long been a cornerstone of Sonoma County’s workplace, therefore County of Sonoma reflects its commitment as an equal employment opportunity employer to continue to contract with companies that hire people with disability and through the Human Services Department to provide employment services that include resources for individuals with disabilities. The County of Sonoma celebrates individuals with disabilities in our workplace, and communities, and to promote employment of individuals with disabilities, to create a more inclusive County.
