Adopt a Gold Resolution proclaiming June 2026 as Pride Month in Sonoma County

End

Executive Summary:

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) highlights that the LGBTQIA2S+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Two Spirit, Plus) community continues to face discrimination globally and nationally, while recognizing its resilience and strength in overcoming these challenges. In Sonoma County, the community remains a vibrant and valued part of local life. CHR invites the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to proclaim June as Pride month to reaffirm its commitment to supporting LGBTQIA2S+ residents and celebrate the diversity and contributions they bring to the community.

Discussion:

The celebration of Pride dates to June 28, 1970, in New York City where many marched from Greenwich Village to Central Park in unity. The celebration was then recognized by County of Sonoma in 1992 when they approved a Pride Resolution. Since then, the month of June is known as Pride Month in the County of Sonoma.

The LGBTQIA2S+ community continues to face significant challenges, including elevated suicide rates among transgender individuals, threats to personal safety, hate crimes, family rejection, cultural stigma, and the persistence of homophobic slurs. Despite these hardships, the community consistently demonstrates resilience and strength in the face of adversity.

In celebration of the richness, diversity, and contributions our LGBTQIA2S+ friends, family members, and neighbors bring to this community, the Commission on Human Rights invites the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to proclaim June 2026, as Pride Month in Sonoma County.
