Executive Summary:

The Board of Supervisors are responsible for appointments to over 75 Boards, Commissions, Committees, and Task Forces. Vacancies and upcoming expiring appointments are posted on the County’s list of Boards, Commissions, Committees, and Task Forces website: <https://sonoma-county.granicus.com/boards/w/808bd6e42edf8e0f>.

 

Per Sonoma County Ordinance 6257, the First 5 Sonoma County Commission, with the support of the First 5 Sonoma County Executive Director, will recruit potential new commissioners, interview candidates and present nominations to the Board of Supervisors for appointment.  The current item recommends appointment of Dr. Daisy Morales to the First 5 Sonoma County Commission.

 

Discussion:

The First 5 Sonoma County Commission is composed of three permanent ex officio members, and six at large members, with each member representing a different sector. First 5 Commission Roles and Responsibilities include strategic community funding, oversight of the First 5 Sonoma County Executive Director and staff, addressing critical issues impacting children's health and well-being in the community, and advocating for policies and resources that promote optimal child development. Dr. Morales is the Superintendent of Santa Rosa City Schools. With a deep passion for education and a genuine dedication to community, Dr. Morales believes in building trust, fostering collaboration, and providing clear, transparent communication to transform the climate and culture of educational organizations. Her approach is rooted in the belief that by building capacity, coaching others, and encouraging people to leverage their strengths, we can develop and grow leadership potential at every level.

 

On December 2, 2024, the First 5 Sonoma County Commission voted unanimously to recommend that the Board of Supervisors appoint Dr. Morales to the First 5 Sonoma County Commission to serve as the local representative of Transitional Kindergarten-12 public education system of early learning and care. The Board of Supervisors is requested to approve the appointment of Dr. Daisy Morales to the First 5 Sonoma County Commission for a two-year term beginning January 27, 2025, through January 26, 2027.
