Adopt a Gold Resolution proclaiming the month of September 2023 as Recovery Month in Sonoma County. (Countywide)
Discussion:
With the designation of September 2023 as Recovery Month, the Department of Health Services (hereinafter, “DHS” or “the Department”) proposes that Sonoma County join the national observance to educate Americans about substance use treatment and mental health services which can enable those with mental and/or substance use disorders to live healthy and rewarding lives. The 2023 National Recovery Month theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger,” reminds people in recovery and those who support them that recovery is possible. “Together We Are Stronger” means that there is strength in numbers and as a community, Sonoma is committed to coming together to address barriers. DHS recognizes that it takes support from many to face the challenges of getting to the stage of recovery and maintaining recovery.
Recovery is for everyone because it benefits everyone. In recovery, we build new connections to ourselves, our families, and our communities. The 2023 National Recovery Month theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger,” encourages and welcomes everyone to join together to support individuals in recovery by lowering barriers to recovery support, creating inclusive spaces and programs, and broadening our understanding of what recovery means for people with different experiences.
The National Recovery Month observance raises awareness and educates communities about the effective services available in the community and works to improve the lives of those affected by mental health and/or substance use disorders.
The 2023 National Recovery Month observance and theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger,” works to acknowledge and celebrate the many individuals in our community including first responders, healthcare workers, community leaders, and advocates who join together to support those in recovery. Additionally, recovery month is intended to inspire people across the country to transform the “I” into “we” and build bridges between families, communities, and groups. We celebrate our diversity and seek to develop deeper understanding, caring, and connection that nurtures recovery.
Recovery Month has been celebrated nationally in September for over 31 years and in California for over 30 years.
