Adopt a Gold Resolution of the Board of Supervisors, County of Sonoma, State of California, proclaiming September 15, 2023 through October 15, 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month in Sonoma County. (Countywide)

 

Discussion:

In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson first recognized Hispanic Heritage Week, later expanded under President Reagan to one month, and each successive President has continued this tradition, including President Joe Biden, who declared September 15 through October 15 to be National Hispanic Heritage Month and who has called upon the people of our county to observe this month with appropriate respect, ceremonies, activities.

 

Sonoma County has a long history of welcoming immigrants and is home to a growing multiethnic and multicultural Latinx Populations, including citizens originating from Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean - all of whom are welcome and make our lives brighter and better. Sonoma County’s Latinx population grew by 70% in the past 20 years and now represents 29% of our citizens, approximately 140,000 people.

 

The diverse Latinx population of the County of Sonoma makes a significant economic contribution and has many profound positive influences on our community through strong commitment to family, faith, education, hard work, vibrant culture, service. Sonoma County Latinx organizations comprised of civically active community members, business owners, elected officials, and high school and college students have continued to foster the culture and tradition as a whole while also advocating and ensuring a voice in Sonoma County on behalf of the Latinx Community. For the past decades, the focus has been in the areas of immigration, education, health, wellness, financial stability, economic engagement, and social justice.

 

Prior Board Actions:

The Board proclaimed September 15 to October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month on 9/9/2014, 9/15/2015, 9/13/2016, 9/12/2017, 9/18/2018, 9/14/2019, 9/14/2021, and 9/13/2022.
