End
Executive Summary:
The Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights invites the County of Sonoma Board of Supervisors to observe February 2025 as Black History Month in Sonoma County.
Discussion:
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans with its origins back to 1915. Since 1976, the month of February has been officially designated as Black History Month by President Gerald Ford.
The 2025 Black History Month theme is “African Americans and Labor. “The Commission on Human Rights seizes this opportunity to recognize the traditional labor of enslaved Africans that help-built Sonoma County. This is the moment to reflect on intersections between Black people work and their workplaces in all their iterations and key moments, themes and events in Black history and culture across time. By honoring the past, the beginning of healing can initiate. The Commission on Human Rights invites the community to approach the healing process using love. This 2025 Black History Month is the time of honesty, communication, and healing.
