Executive Summary:
Adopt a Gold Resolution declaring May 2023 as Older Americans Month. (Countywide)
Discussion:
Established in 1963, this is the 60th anniversary of Older Americans Month. Each May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month. Older Americans Month is a time to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of older adults in Sonoma County.
Older adults play vital, positive roles in our communities - as family members, friends, mentors, volunteers, civic leaders, members of the workforce and more. Just as every person is unique, so too is how they age and how they choose to do it - and there is no “right” way. This flexible thinking about aging benefits our county as older adults remain engaged, independent, and included.
The 2023 theme is Aging Unbound. This theme offers an opportunity to explore a wide range of aging experiences and to promote the importance of enjoying independence and fulfillment by paving our own paths as we age.
Here are some ways to participate in Aging Unbound:
• Embrace the opportunity to change: Go on an adventure and push boundaries by not letting age define your limits.
• Explore the rewards of growing older: Continue to grow through reading, listening, attending classes, and participating in creative activities.
• Stay engaged in your community: Stay active by volunteering, working, mentoring, participating in social clubs, and taking part in activities at your local senior center or elsewhere.
• Form relationships: Invest time with people to discover deeper connections with family, friends, and community members.
The Sonoma County Aging and Disability Resource Hub (ADRH) is available to the community to help find services and resources. Older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers can access the ADRH by calling (707) 565-INFO (4636) or visiting the website, www.socoadrh.org.
Sonoma County is committed to honoring older adults and celebrating the contributions made by older people in our communities. To demonstrate this commitment, the Board of Supervisors annually proclaims May as Older Americans Month in Sonoma County.
