Executive Summary:

The Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights invite the Board of Supervisors to proclaim February 2026 as Black History Month in Sonoma County, recognizing the centennial of national Black history commemorations, honoring the legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the founders of Black History Month, and acknowledging the vital contributions of Black families to Sonoma County while reaffirming a commitment to equity and justice.

Discussion:

The year 2026 marks the centennial of national commemorations of Black history. This milestone traces back to September 9, 1915, when Dr. Carter G. Woodson and his colleagues-George Cleveland Hall, William D. Hartgrove, Jesse E. Moorland, Alexander L. Jackson, and James E. Stamps-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Their work established the formal teaching, study, preservation, and celebration of Black history in the United States.

In 1926, Dr. Woodson launched the first Negro History Week. From that beginning grew what we now observe as Black History Month-an enduring tradition that has become woven into the fabric of American life and increasingly recognized around the world. The 100th theme, The Founders of Black History Month, invites us to reflect on how these commemorations have deepened understanding, advanced equity, and elevated the contributions and experiences of Black people in the modern world.

In Sonoma County, Black families have played an essential role in shaping our communities, economy, and civic life. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR), established in 1993, is committed to honoring that legacy, promoting positive human relations, and continuing to confront racial injustice wherever it exists. The Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights respectfully asks the Board of Supervisors to proclaim February 2026 as Black History Month in Sonoma County.
