Executive Summary:
The objective of the 2021 California Fire Safe Council County Coordinators Grant Program is to educate, encourage, and develop countywide collaboration and coordination among various wildfire mitigation groups operating within counties containing State Responsibility Area (SRA) lands. The California Fire Safe Council requires that a county designate a local wildfire mitigation organization to be the county’s applicant and subrecipient of the grant, should a county itself not apply. Fire Safe Sonoma is both qualified and prepared to apply for the funding to help support the organization’s primary goals of outreach and education. Fire Safe Sonoma would be the grant subrecipient and would be responsible for fulfilling all grant requirements.
Discussion:
The California Fire Safe Council (CFSC), in partnership with the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) and the Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC), announced the 2021 County Coordinators Grant Program in late June. The objective of the County Coordinators Grant is to educate, encourage, and develop countywide collaboration and coordination among various wildfire mitigation groups operating within counties containing State Responsibility Area (SRA) lands. Up to 24 counties will receive a one-time grant of $175,000 to be used to cover administrative costs relevant to countywide coordination efforts, including, but not limited to the salary, support, and administrative costs for a designated coordinator. The project timeframe is October 1, 2021 through March 31, 2023. There is no local match requirement.
The California Fire Safe Council requires that a county designate a local wildfire mitigation organization to be the county’s applicant and subrecipient of the grant, should a county itself not apply. The associated resolution would authorize Fire Safe Sonoma to be the County of Sonoma’s applicant to the 2021 County Coordinators Grant Program.
Fire Safe Sonoma is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to increase awareness of wildfire issues in Sonoma County and to help local residents and firefighting agencies achieve improved wildfire safety. Additionally, Fire Safe Sonoma has a proven track record of working with the County and is both qualified and prepared to submit an application to the 2021 County Coordinators Grant Program by the August 31, 2021 submission deadline. Fire Safe Sonoma intends to fund a coordinator who will help to fulfill the objectives of the grant and the primary goals of the organization of outreach and education. Should grant funding be awarded, Fire Safe Sonoma would be the grant subrecipient and be responsible for fulfilling all grant requirements.
