Discussion:
First 5 Sonoma County is a public agency focused on supporting the healthy development of children from prenatal age through age five. Funded by California’s Proposition 10 tobacco tax and Measure I - Sonoma County Child Care & Children's Health Initiative, it invests in programs that promote early learning, family resilience, and child health. The agency partners with local organizations and provides grants to improve outcomes for young children and their families. Key initiatives include parenting support, early childhood education, and innovative programs like guaranteed income pilots for low-income families. Through strategic planning and community engagement, First 5 Sonoma County aims to give every child in Sonoma County a strong start in life.
Imelda Vera has resided in Sonoma County for 12 years. Originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, Ms. Vera and her siblings were brought to Calistoga at a young age, where their family made the Napa Valley their home. After graduating from high school, Ms. Vera earned an associate’s degree from Santa Rosa Junior College and later transferred to San Francisco State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Ms. Vera will represent the child and family-serving nonprofit organization sector on the First 5 Sonoma County Commission; she is currently a bilingual Child Welfare Program Manager with the Child Parent Institute (CPI).
On September 22, 2025, the First 5 Sonoma County Commission voted unanimously to recommend the Board of Supervisors reappoint Ms. Vera to a second term of service as the child and family-serving nonprofit organization representative. If approved, her reappointment term of two years would begin January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027.
