Executive Summary:
National Correctional Officers and Employees Week is a dedicated time to recognize the essential work correctional officers and employees do every day. In recognition of the difficult work performed by the dedicated employees of the Sheriff’s Office Detention Division, Sheriff Eddie Engram is requesting the Board of Supervisors adopt a Gold Resolution designating May 4 - 10, 2025, as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week.
Discussion:
Former President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187 creating National Correctional Officers Week in 1984 to recognize and honor the nation’s correctional professionals and thank them for their service. In 1996 it was expanded to include both Correctional Officers and Employees. The purpose is to celebrate and bring awareness to the importance and significance of this profession. National Correctional Officers and Employees Week is a fitting occasion to honor the dedicated public servants in our nation’s correctional systems. “The professionalism, dedication and courage exhibited by these officers throughout the performance of these demanding and often conflicting roles deserve our utmost respect,” stated Reagan in his May 5, 1984, address.
Jail facilities are in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and often house dangerous and/or difficult individuals experiencing a range of challenges and issues. No matter the situation, correctional professionals maintain the critical business of keeping the public safe and the population within their facilities safe and secure. This year, we are particularly focused on the physical and mental wellbeing of every correctional officer and employee. These brave women and men deserve more than ever to be celebrated for their dedication to public safety.
There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into operating a detention facility that is carried out by sworn correctional staff and detention support staff including janitors, detention assistants, detention specialists, kitchen, and healthcare staff.
This Resolution provides Sonoma County the opportunity to recognize the complex, dangerous, and challenging responsibilities carried out by all staff working in our detention facilities.
Correctional employees take on an enormous level of both personal and professional responsibility each day they come to work. We respectfully request that the board honor and recognize the dedication and commitment of these employees and thank the men and women who serve within our detention facilities each day. We encourage all our residents to join in recognition and appreciation of the outstanding professional service correctional employees prove to ensure the safety and welfare of our community.

Since 2014, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed the first full week in May as “National Correctional Officers and Employees Week.”
