Adopt a Gold Resolution in recognition of Sarah Reid for 20 plus years of exemplary volunteerism supporting parks, trails and environmental programs and organizations in Sonoma County

End

Executive Summary:

Sarah Reid works with a variety of organizations, and she volunteers almost every day in one park or another. She has been active with Sonoma County Regional Parks for over 20 years. For ten years she served on the County’s Mounted Assistance Unit and twenty years on the Volunteer Foot Patrol. Sarah has assisted in planning future trail systems, parking lots, and picnic table and trail sign placements at Taylor Mountain Regional Park, Hood Mountain Regional Park, and Tolay Lake Regional Park. Currently she serves as a Wildlife Volunteer helping facilitate important wildlife protection programs. She actively participates as a Docent during Park Preview Days at the future Mark West Creek, Calabazas Creek, and Carrington Ranch Regional Parks.

Discussion:

Sarah has been active with the Redwood Trails Alliance (formerly the Sonoma County Trails Council). She has served as a Board Member, Trail Crew Leader and trail worker supporting the development and maintenance of trails at Jack London State Park, Annadel State Park, and Taylor Mountain Regional Park. Additionally, she has worked with Landpaths, assisting in the planning for trails at Sonoma Coast State Park and then assisting in maintaining them once they were completed. For the Sonoma County Ag & Open Space District, Sarah volunteers as a Foot Patrol at Calabazas Creek Preserve and Saddle Mountain Preserve.

Sarah has earned two Naturalist Certifications: Certified California Naturalist (2017: Sonoma Ecology Center) and Certified California Naturalist (2023: Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods). As a Certified California Naturalist, Sarah has taught classes and developed educational curricula and trainings for the Sonoma State University Center for Environmental Inquiry. She teaches a seminar course on creating and managing lands for public access and learning how to design and build trails. She volunteers in the Naturalist Ed Series, providing trainings and outings at Fairfield Osborn Preserve for Osborn Naturalists and the public. She also leads trainings in the field on plant identification and nature at Fairfield Osborn for Sonoma State University classes and Cotati-Rohnert Park School District Educators.

As a Naturalist, Sarah is active. She contributes articles about wildlife and nature to Sonoma Land Trust’s newsletter and social media. She contributes a wealth of information to help scientists understand what is currently happening as a result of climate change. She posts thousands of observations on iNaturalist, and participates in iNaturalist projects and Bioblitzes, helping with climate change research. She created and monitors data collection projects for local parks and preserves. As a Naturalist, she participates in raptor migration counts with the West County Hawk Watch.

With all of her volunteer service and contributions to our parks and our County’s environmental programs and organizations, Sarah Reid is, indeed, a worthy recipient of recognition by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.
