Executive Summary:
Adopt a Gold Resolution commemorating and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Commission on the Status of Women
Discussion:
On December 23, 1975, the County of Sonoma Board of Supervisors passed Ordinance number 1850 establishing the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). CSW was established to promote equal rights for all women and opportunities that enhance the quality of life for all women and girls, and to address issues of discrimination and prejudice that negatively affect women in Sonoma County.
In 1980 to advance their stated goals, the Commission through their Education Task Force launched the Women's History Week project. The project expanded the scope of the Women's History Week project by recognizing and celebrating the diverse and historic accomplishments of women through educational materials and programs. In 1987, inspired by the work of the National Women's History Project, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, acknowledging the vital role of women in our Country by designating the month of March as a national celebration of women and women’s history.
The Commission has created community partnerships with many local organizations. These organizations include Sonoma County Family Justice Center, First Five Sonoma County, Guided to Safety, League of Women Voters, National Organization for Women, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Sonoma County, Verity, Los Cien, Sonoma County Pride, Women’s Global Leadership Initiative, Women’s Recovery Services (WRS), YWCA, Sonoma County 4Cs, the Association of California Commissions for Women and others. Through active involvement in these partnerships, the Commission has supported and advanced affordable childcare, equal pay for women, advocating for mental health resources, securing safety for immigrant women and girls, promoting domestic violence awareness, and fighting against human trafficking.
CSW uses their collective voice to influence decision-makers and empower the community to eliminate systemic barriers to full equity. Commissioners work to ensure women have social mobility, economic autonomy, reproductive freedom, and equitable representation in leadership roles. CSW with the support of the Board of Supervisors will continue the important work to ensure that the voices of women and girls voices are heard.
