Title
Adopt a Gold Resolution Proclaiming March 1-7, 2022 as National Weights and Measures Week in Sonoma County.
End
Executive Summary:
To commemorate the signing of the first weights and measures law by President John Adams on March 2, 1799, the Sonoma County Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures would like to formally recognize the week of March 1 - 7, 2022 as Weights & Measures Week in Sonoma County.
Discussion:
Today, the value of many items purchased daily by local consumers is based on a weighed or measured value. Whether its fuel for the family vehicle, meats and vegetables for the family meal, or a taxi drive from the airport, it is the role of the weights and measures inspector to safeguard the integrity of commerce in our local economy so that buyer and seller have a fair playing field.
In Sonoma County, Weights and Measure inspectors regulate and inspect over 1,700 local businesses and commercial device owners. From the local grocery store scale to the certified farmers’ market scale to the truck scale that weighs the estimated 200,000 tons of wine grapes coming from local vines.
The work of weights and measures inspectors impact our lives every day. Every time you fill up at the pump or go grocery shopping, and you’re buying goods and services priced, advertised, and sold based on some quantity, be it gallons, liters, kilowatt-hours, kilograms, pounds or even time, a measurement is involved. It is the role of the weights and measures inspector to verify the accuracy of the device making that measurement.
