Executive Summary:

The Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women is requesting the Board of Supervisors adopt a gold resolution proclaiming August 26, 2026, as Women’s Equality Day in Sonoma County.

Discussion:

Women’s Equality Day was established in 1971 to commemorate the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. August 26th was selected to honor this historic achievement and to recognize the United States women’s suffrage movement, which officially began in New York in 1848.

The Commission on the Status of Women is dedicated to promoting equal rights and opportunities that enhance the quality of life for all women and girls, while addressing issues of discrimination and bias that continue to impact women in Sonoma County.

On August 26, 2026, the nation will observe the 106th anniversary of the enactment of the 19th Amendment. Women’s Equality Day provides an opportunity to recognize and honor the individuals whose advocacy and perseverance advanced equal rights for women, while also raising awareness of the ongoing challenges women face today.

In recognition of this important occasion, the Commission on the Status of Women respectfully requests that the Board of Supervisors proclaim August 26, 2026, as Women’s Equality Day in Sonoma County.
