Executive Summary:

Adopt a Gold Resolution Recognizing October 2023 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in Sonoma County. (Countywide)

Discussion:

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) originated in 1945, when Congress passed a law declaring the first week in October to bring awareness, educate, and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to the whole month of October. Over the years, the support for this law extended through various federal, state, and local policies, services, education, and programs. Its purpose was no longer restricted to just enlisting employment for the disabled. It also honors the hard-work and contributions of America's workers with disabilities past and present and demonstrates supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices that benefit employers and employees, and the community.

The essence of NDEAM mirrors a big part of what the County of Sonoma strives to be. This is why our County is proud to be a part of this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month, reflecting on this year’s theme, "Disability: Part of the Equity Equation." The County of Sonoma as an employer, continues to value and support our disabled workers and applicants through our policies, partnerships, and programs that allow for equal opportunities.
