Executive Summary:
Adopt a Gold Resolution of the Board of Supervisors of the County of Sonoma, Recognizing June 19, 2023, as Juneteenth Independence Day. (Countywide)
Discussion:
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. June 19, 1865, marks the day when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were free. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after President Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Locally, Marteal Perry founded Santa Rosa’s Juneteenth Celebration in 1954. Marteal Perry was a true advocate for the underserved of Santa Rosa and represented the community on clean water issues, child welfare, and many other social issues.
This year will be the 53rd Annual MLK Community Festival Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion celebrating Juneteenth. This event is free and open to community members of all ages with various activities including music, guest speakers, family friendly games, basketball tournament, and food encouraging the community to come together and remember why we celebrate this important day.
