Recommended action

Enhance the ability of County Supervisors and staff to respond to a major emergency or disaster. Key objectives include:

1) Provide an overview of the County’s wildfire hazard and potential impacts.

2) Review the County’s wildfire mitigation, preparedness and response capabilities.

3) Discuss how the County government, local jurisdictions and allied stakeholders would respond and initiate recovery for a major wildfire event.

Executive Summary:

The disaster workshop is one in a series of learning and discussion opportunities designed to enhance the ability of County Supervisors and County staff to respond to a major emergency or disaster. During the workshop, staff will provide information and engage in discussion regarding the hazards posed by a wildfire in Sonoma County. Discussion points include wildfire science, significant wildfire hazard areas, potential impacts, wildfire-related mitigation and preparedness efforts, as well as response and recovery.  Staff will provide program updates and improvements in preparedness and response capabilities related to the wildfire hazard - these subjects include fire detection cameras, staffing during red flag warning events, alert & warning systems, electrical system de-energization and evacuation planning.

Prior Board Actions:

4/16/19:  The Board conducted a second disaster workshop focusing on the earthquake hazard. 1/15/19:  The Board conducted its first disaster workshop addressing the hazards posed by winter storms and flooding. 

6/11/18:  The Board adopted the October 2017 Complex Fires Emergency Operations Center After Action Report which recommended the Board conduct quarterly disaster preparedness updates at its meetings.
